Official Grand Opening of the New 171 Genesee Street Building in Downtown Utica

The New Hartford Chamber of Commerce announces the Official Grand Opening of the newly renovated 171 Genesee Street in downtown Utica during its monthly Chamber Night. 171 Genesee is an excellent example of a successful urban redevelopment project completed by local business partners, C. Edward Schmidt and Christine Martin. The public is welcome at this month’s Chamber Night where members, friends and colleagues will celebrate their achievement with an open house and happy hour on Thursday June 14th at 5:30pm.

Readers may recall that 171 Genesee Street used to house the Catholic Book Store on its ground floor. Today, Character Coffee and Christine’s Cookie Shoppe occupy the first floor and the third floor is home to the Leatherstocking Ballet. The fourth and fifth floors have been renovated into the hottest new industrial-chic downtown event venue where many old building features were maintained and tastefully incorporated into the design.

Christine Martin is a board member of the New Hartford Chamber of Commerce and the New Hartford Historical Society, owner of FosterMartin Advertising, and partners with Ed Schmidt in 171 Genesee. She is currently rehabilitating the adjoining 167 Genesee Street, formerly known as the Downtown Rite Aid Building.  This historic building will soon house 22 luxury apartments, a grocery store, and a Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwich franchise. Martin has made many investments in both Utica and New Hartford over the past several years and is always working on a project or three!

Ed Schmidt is the Chairman of the Oneida County Arson Task Force, as well as the Training Director and Board Member of the NYS Police Juvenile Officers Association. This year, Ed is marking 30 years in local law enforcement and service to the community.

Valentino’s Banquet Hall will cater the evening event and feature wine, beer, soft drinks and appetizers. Admission is complimentary for members of both the New Hartford and Utica Chambers of Commerce, but advance registration is required by Wednesday, June 19th. Day-of-event registrations are $10 for all. Please add your name to the Guest List by visiting the chamber website at or by calling 315-796-1520.
